This year, VKH Brno is once again organizing a course on the basics of the Christian faith, which can serve as preparation for those interested in receiving the sacraments of initiation into the Catholic Church—baptism, confirmation, and the Eucharist. It is intended primarily for university students and graduates, but is also open to older applicants. We start on October 7 and 8, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. at the Student Center at Kozí 8. The course is divided into two groups, one led on Mondays by Sister Františka Majerčíková from the Society of the Daughters of Christian Love – Vincentians, and the other on Tuesdays by student chaplain Fr. Jan Regner, SJ.
The course consists of regular weekly meetings, during which the basics of the Christian faith are discussed (the creed, or profession of faith, the Bible, ethics, liturgy, and spirituality). These meetings are supplemented by weekend retreats, which usually provide more time to get to know each other better, discuss sensitive topics, and share our faith together. Part of the conditions for receiving the sacrament will also be a personal interview with one of the mentors.
The preparation period lasts either one or two academic years. Preparation for baptism (or preparation for first communion and confirmation for non-practicing Catholics) tends to be longer, beginning in the first academic year in October and lasting until Easter of the following academic year. Preparation for confirmation for those who already practice their faith lasts only from autumn to spring of the same academic year. After the preparation is completed, the sacraments are administered either together at a student Mass, or it is possible to request confirmation of completion of the preparation and receive the sacraments in one’s home parish.
Regular meetings are also open to other interested parties. For example, unbaptized people who are interested in Christianity for some reason, or, conversely, practicing believers who want to strengthen their faith.
